We appear to be self-cleaning ovens, effortlessly churning out fresh, hot and delicious chocolate chip cookies without leaving a mess. Even when we don’t have the perfect temperature, ingredients and other conditions that we wish made our missions easier â€" we perform reliably. Do you know your opponent? If you embrace the facts: business is not nice, people don’t play fair and cheaters often prosper, and if you’re okay with that â€" you can save your energy for the real fight.   Guess who is your opponent? Stretch but dont break Dream big but don’t torment yourself. Goals are meant to stretch you, but not so far as to break you. We all have an internal thermostat regulating our sense of well-being, with a surprisingly small range for novelty and change in any one space of time. So, do yourself a favor, and set the next upward threshold at 2 degrees not 20 degrees higher as you make the climb in your mind, which is where success starts. As you rise in reality, acclimate to the stress, the perks, the people, and the altitude. The air gets thinner and it can be really hard to take that centering, cleansing breath â€" as you go higher and higher in your business or career. Like any great ascent, you have to see it and take it, in stages. People who manage their careers, reputations and the growth of their brands are not just self-confident.They have soothing self-talk. Most of the time, were thinking about the next step, not the entire mind-boggling journey. If you are pushed or pulled over your limit, even by your own imagination, you may creatively find ways to self-sabotage. As soon as you’ve laid down the great get, such as: “I will be the leading social media strategist or blogger or pundit or accountant or tech genius in my field,” drop in mini-goals.   You eat an elephant and an apple the same way, one bite at a time. While employers should still encourage and promote healthy behaviors in a variety of ways, focusing on the physical office is a great place to start. It’s an area where employees spend over eight hours a day, five days a week, and the employer has complete control. Employers can help break up sedentary time by adding opportunities for employees to engage in low-level activities â€" whether through the use of sit-stand workstations, walking meetings, or standing collaborative areas. Mounting evidence confirms that exercise will not undo the damage done by prolonged sitting, so employers should seek ways to help employees get on their feet in a more proactive way. By updating the office environment and providing a more active workplace, employers can more directly influence healthy behaviors. 2. Keep employees comfortable and productive While the impact on the body of prolonged sitting has been well-documented in recent years, employers have been slow to connect the dots between extended sitting and the physical health of employees â€" or its corresponding effect on the overall health of an organization. Employees who sit for too long become restless and are forced to take breaks to manage discomfort or distraction. A staggering 58 percent of employees admitted to taking two to five breaks a day to relieve the discomfort of sitting. Results of the index indicate restlessness from prolonged sitting is more disruptive to organizational productivity than visiting social media sites. While many employers are worried about cyberloafingâ€" personal use of a company’s internet access while at work â€" and its impact on productivity, it’s clear that employees are spending more time moving around (61 percent) than cyberloafing (a combined 39 percent). What’s more, outside research suggests that, when interrupted, it can take a worker more than 20 minutes to get back on task. While frequent movement should be encouraged, it should come from knowing the benefits of standing and striving for better health and wellness. It is critical for businesses to help employees have a voice in creating a work environment that fully supports their bodies and their ability to do their best work. One size does not fit all in terms of wellness opportunities, but the goal is always the sameâ€"keep employees comfortable and productive . Addressing the discomfort at the source is important to finding a solution that benefits the employee and the overall health of the organization. 3. Create a more positive work environment Office culture is arguably becoming one of the major differentiators for recruitment and retention.
